Sometimes, however, the greatest reward comes from embracing our long heritage of winemaking. “Legacy” is our celebration of the truly world-class fortified wines that were made in the Finger Lakes in the 19th and 20th centuries, wines that were overlooked at the time and forgotten since. Intensely nutty and caramel driven on the nose, this 2006 Niagara has been carefully tended for over a decade to deliver a concentrated and nuanced cream sherry style dessert wine. It is a project we are very excited about beginning again: boldly from the present, proudly of our past.

2007 Merlot Glacier Ridge

Glacier Ridge Vineyards is a small, perfectly located and managed vineyard that lies along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake in the glacially formed Finger Lakes region. It consistently produces fruit with intense color and complex, smoky flavors. Rich plum and blackberry give way to a remarkable and complex finish of coffee and dark plum with hints of vanilla and oak. Vinification of this Merlot is straightforward and traditional using ripe, gently crushed fruit, warm fermentations punched down frequently by hand, aging in a mix of new and older American oak barrels, and minimal racking and blending. The goal is to let the fruit express the structure, fruit and tannins that come from the vineyard.

Merlot Glacier Ridge Vineyards 2007 Shows unusual depth for the region's reds, with intriguing graphite, plum sauce and spice notes nicely framed by alluring, well-integrated toast. Herb and tobacco hints on the finish. (WS - James Molesworth, February, 2009) Wine Spectator - 88 points

Curry Creek Vineyard always delivers a gewurztraminer for those who love gewurztraminer. Opulent, rich, generous in floral and fruit characters, this is an exuberant expression of the perfume and richness that we love in Gewurztraminer.

The 2010 vintage had loads of sunshine and heat, but with rain in just the right amounts. The growing season was very warm and ripe, ideal growing conditions that led to a relatively early harvest for Gewurztraminer on October 4, 2010. A high Brix count led to a high alcohol content while still retaining some of the natural sweetness of the grape. This wine is aging into a silky, compelling style.

Lahoma Vineyards is located across Seneca Lake about three miles from Red Newt Cellars. In addition to plantings of Riesling and other Vinifera Varieties, growers Kenny and Harlan Fulkerson have planted 15 acres of Riesling on this site exclusively for Red Newt Cellars. It is a gently sloping site on the west side of Seneca Lake comprised of a patchwork of Lansing and Dunkirk soils. It is a site with expressionand personality.

This Riesling is voluptuous and racy with bright citrus aromas in the nose and aperfectly balanced palate with luscious sweetness and edgy acidity. This vibrant interplay of sweetness and acidity create a wine that is intriguing and pairs remarkably well with food.

Tango Oaks Vineyard is located less than one half mile from Red Newt Cellars. The second crop from a recent vineyard planting on a fruit growing site that dates back centuries, this Riesling is racy and bright with aromas of citrus and orange blossom in the nose and a perfectly balanced palate with hints of nectarine and quince.

A long, warm growing season in 2011 yielded plenty of ripe flavors and natural sugar.Bouts of rain at harvest time necessitated diligence in the vineyard as well as special carein the cellars for premium quality fruit. The warmer vintage provided Red Newt Rieslings the opportunity to express warmer vintage characteristics such as honey, baked apricots, and luscious red apples while still retaining their traditional acid backbone. Overall, the 2011 Rieslings show opulence and extraction.

2012 Riesling Bullhorn Creek

If it is possible to have too perfect of weather for harvest, 2012 may have pushed those limits. Warm, sunny, and dry nearly every day allowed for picking on whichever date was deemed best. An extremely early budbreak, nearly a month ahead of schedule, managed to avoid all frost and deliver a long, warm, and even growing season. Adequate rainfall throughout prevented drought stress despite the heat.

Vinous - 92 points Pale yellow gold. A fantastic wine, the 2012 Bullhorn Creek Riesling is impeccably balanced, with the nose and palate in perfect harmony. This is decidedly not a fruity wine, though its nose of wet stone, moss, diesel, and a touch of Asian pear still manages to be charming. The palate boasts 10 grams per liter of residual sugar, which it wears quite well. Super-expressive and juicy, this wine is mouth-watering and extremely appealing on the palate. The finish is long and stony, with a Chablis-like mineral funk underlining the finish. Very nice.

2013 Dry Riesling Reserve

A warm and relatively wet year led to explosive vegetative growth and a heavier fruit set than is typical.Pristine looking vineyards, well mowed and hedged for maximum sun and air exposure. Yields on the year were 50% above average. Blended with an eye towards components that layered a laser-like focus from the lemon peel of the nose due to the Tango Oaks component, a burst of bright orchard fruit from the Lahoma component, and a bit of residual sugar from the Sawmill Creek North Block component to balance the racy acidity.

The reserve Riesling from Red Newt is inspired by the vintage it hails from and the characteristics that make that vintage unique. Showcasing a traditional Finger Lakes Riesling style, the wine has a strong acid backbone with beautiful fruit characteristics wrapped around its core.

2013 Riesling - Barrel Fermented

This wine marks Red Newt’s first foray into barrel fermented Riesling and is a clear reflection of our careful winemaking approach. Having tasted many examples, local and especially international, of Rieslings that had fermented in oak barrels, we were intrigued to see how it would work with our own wines.

Simply put, our favorite examples from around the world are so well done that the fact they spent time in barrel is undetectable and irrelevant; they neither smell or taste of oak. Rather, the oak component is there to broaden and deepen the midpalate texture of the wine; a textural component from the oak itself, as well as the lees contact a barrel provides. That was our aim in this wine, a barrel fermented Riesling that explores how to use oak without it being noticed. And as we kept track of its fermentation and post-fermentation aging, we were able to remove the Riesling when the oak was its most integrated to bottle it at that point.

How does the wine reflect our careful winemaking approach, however? As a 100% Tango Oaks Vineyard Riesling that came from the same starting juice as our 2013 Tango Oaks Riesling, this wine also happens to double as a controlled experiment that we can taste versus its partner and evaluate. We are still learning more every year as the wines age side by side, but try them both yourself to find out!

Lahoma Vineyard Riesling is always overwhelmingly orange-fruit driven from the moment it arrives as picked grapes at Red Newt. This wine seeks to bottle that joyful fruit expression of tangerine and apricot every year in its most exuberant form. Modeled off the balance point of a German Kabinett, it is juicy to drink when young but has the sugar and freshness to reward cellar aging.

2013 Riesling - Tango Oaks Vineyard

Tango Oaks vineyards is located less than one half mile from Red Newt Cellars on a fruit growing site that dates back centuries. This Riesling features exotic aromas of grapefruit, Pippin Apple, and nectarine that hide a surprisingly dry and crisp mid palate. With flavor of white peach and Thai basil, it continues to balance the warmth of ripe fruit against a distinct and refreshing minerality. Creating a wine that is intriguing and pairs remarkably well with food.

Starting with the 2012 vintage, Tango Oaks vines had reached a level of maturity that allowed them to support a dry and mineral driven Riesling. This wine marks the second exploration of that style, working with the Alsatian clone Riesling and extremely gravelly soil of the vineyard to make an entirely new Red Newt Riesling. Tango Oaks Riesling is always charming on the nose, which gave us the confidence to work on a tighter midpalate so that the wine might open up with cellar age.

2013 Riesling Sawmill - North Block

Inspired by the crystalline beauty and clarity of German Spatlese Rieslings, the Sawmill Creek ‘North Block’ Riesling is the site we believe best suits that style of wine. With lower alcohol and higher residual sugar, the natural acidity of Sawmill Creek makes this wine wonderfully refreshing and feather light. Juicy when young, but made to be aged for many years.

The 2013 Riesling "Sawmill Creek Vineyards - North Block" has 49 grams per liter of residual sugar and 8% alcohol. Says winemaker Kelby Russell: "The North block best expresses itself as a Spatlese style Riesling." The rich beginning certainly indicates that this is an off-dry Riesling, but I never would've guessed that there were 49 grams per liter of residual sugar in it. The richness moderates with air and becomes a bit more subtle. The elegant mid-palate makes it seem refined and the acidity balances the sugar beautifully. Harmonious, gentle and lush, this drinks beautifully. There is just a hint of flint in the background.

Red Newt Merlot is made to be a pure and refreshing expression of well grown Merlot in the Finger Lakes. In essence we aim for a marriage of the plum and plushness from Merlot with the refreshing character and structure of Finger Lakes red wines; a match that is ideal for pairing with grilled and roasted foods.

An even harvest with several dry and sunny stretches that helped both for ripening and selecting harvest dates. The gradual cooling down of post-harvest into winter did occur slightly earlier than normal, around the third week of October as opposed to early November. Beautiful fruit. Open clusters with no disease pressure or pest damage.

While the fruit may have started out the same way as the Curry Creek Vineyard Pinot Gris of the same vintage, this wine spent some time in oak barrels and went through malolactic fermentation. Reminiscent of a Chardonnay the light oaking on this wine creates an unctuous mouthfeel and soft creamy flavors interplay with the stonefruit characteristics of Curry Creek Vineyards.

For all the aromatic-driven and crystalline Rieslings that Red Newt produces, this wine seeks to do the opposite by instead focusing on mid-plate texture and breadth. This wine ideally should showcase the remarkably rich fruit that Curry Creek delivers in a way that pleases Chardonnay fans, aromatic white adherents, and the foods that pair with both.

The 2014 vintage of Pinot Gris showcases the perfectly ripened fruit, picked on a cool October morning and tractored to Red Newt Cellars to enjoy an overnight cold soak before being pressed off. Aged on the lees for 8 months before being racked off, filtered and bottled. A dry, crisp fruit-forward wine has been sitting in the bottle since 2015 and it is drinking beautifully.

With the 2014 Pinot Gris, grapes, the goal is to respect Winegrowers John and Allison Santos' passion and the fact that their fruit bares little resemblance to a light and fruity Pinot Grigio. 2014 Riesling Bullhorn Creek

2014 was a relatively normal growing season overall, the biggest concern being fears of winter damage from the winter prior. These concerns ended up not impacting the quality or quantity of the harvest versus the long term average, however An even harvest with several dry and sunny stretches that helped both for ripening and selecting harvest dates. The gradual cooling down of post-harvest into winter did occur slightly earlier than normal, around the third week of October as opposed to early November.

A textural and spicy dry Riesling that plays off the unique attributes of the long ripening required of Bullhorn Creek. Built to grow over many years in bottle in this delicate style which is a tribute to classic Finger Lakes Rieslings that have come before.

2015 Gewurztraminer - Curry Creek

Opulent, rich, and generous in floral and fruit characters; this is an exuberant expression of the perfume and richness that we love in Gewurztraminer. We hope you also find this wine a bold experssion of the grape, the 2015 growing season, and the dedication of growers John and Allison Santos. Due to the harsh, cold winter the Curry Creek vineyard set a very small crop in 2015. Just one barrel fermented by Assistant Winemaker Meagz Goodwin.

The intention of the 2015 Gewurztraminer was to produce a wine that had a bit more structure than that of the Alsatian expression. The barrel fermentation provides that structure while the inclusion of the 30 gallons of stainless steel aged Gewurz bring back some of the high-tone floral notes that can be lost due to barrel. Extended lees contact assists in incorporating the higher alcohol produced by this varietal.

2015 Noble Riesling Late Harvest

Vinous Deep, bright gold in hue. This Beerenauslese style wine was produced from botrytis-infected bunches that were picked in the second half of November. The nose is gorgeous, offering super sweet apricot, white flowers, white tea leaves, warm spice cake, and pineapple. The texture is extremely concentrated and unctuous, with a sweet core of tropical fruit that coats the palate and lingers well into the finish. The acidity is modest but does its job, adding definition to the billowing palate.

2015 Riesling -the Knoll- Lahoma Vineyards

The "Knoll" is a pristine vineyard on a well drained knoll above the rest of Lahoma Vineyards. In a moderate boytritis harvest, this was the latest pick and cleanest fruit that came to Red Newt Cellars. A riper more tropical expression of Riesling, the palate is weighty with a core of stone fruit and minerality packed into this lush wine.

Freshly poured the nose of grapefruit and smoke is rather like that of Red Newt's regular dry riesling of this vintage. Yet then the passion fruit, pineapple, mangoes and lemon balm come through making it so much more complex. This extremely concentrated wine manages to be as powerful as it is finely nuanced from the surge of ripe fruit at the front to the diamond-bright finish that seems to vibrate on your tongue. Not yet released. Should be at its youthful best 2018-20, but this can age way longer than that.

Lahoma Vineyards - The Knoll:

A special two acre block of Riesling within the fifteen acres of Riesling for Red Newt at Lahoma Vineyards on the southwest side of Seneca Lake, The Knoll has been distinct from the time the vines went in. Planted with Geisenheim 239 Riesling, The Knoll is in fact a sandy knoll of land that rises over the rest of the rolling hills of Lahoma on a unique patch of Dunkirk Sandy-Loam. This soil type separates The Knoll from the other, slightly heavier, soils at Lahoma and is a relative rarity in the remainder of the Finger Lakes, but for Riesling it seems to be perfect. With both excellent air drainage due to The Knoll and the water drainage of the soil, this block typically sees little disease pressure and is picked very ripe near the end of harvest.

The 2015 Kelby James Russell Riesling was inspired by the style of one of the world's great and overlooked Riesling producing countries, Australia. Made with 100% Riesling from the rich fruit of Lahoma Vineyard on Seneca Lake, it is our twist on an age-worthy style. The lime and lime-blossom aromas are reminiscent of Australian riesling (which provided the role model for the winemaker of Red Newt Cellars' solo project). Glacier Ridge takes a studied minimalist approach in the vineyard; all weed control is manual and allows for some non-grape vegetation for competition as well as insect biodiversity. Crop size is subsequently lower as a result, with a notable difference of increased ripening capability of that grapes.

2017 Cabernet Franc Glacier Ridge

2017 was the first vintage since 2009 to be notable below average in temperature during the majority of the growing season. A welcome change for Riesling, for Cabernet Franc it put more pressure than usual on pushing the harvest date later. With the cooperation of the sun and heat for weeks after a Labor Day Weekend, marked by sunny sweater-weather, ripeness was no longer an issue.

A warm and dry harvest allowed us to leave the grapes on the vine to ripen in flavor without sacrificing in freshness. This oak-aged wine is ripe and rich wine with the characteristic raspberry and violet notes of Cabernet Franc married to the smokiness typical of Glacier Ridge grapes.

2017 Dry Rose - Kelby James Russell

The 2017 KJR Rose is the fourth vintage of this stunning Dry Rose in the Kelby James Russell label. It is a refreshingly and distinctly crisp rose, with distinctive minerally overlayed by bright fruit and intensely vibrant color. The winemaking to produce this wine was directed and precise.

10% whole clusters were placed in the bottom of a stainless steel tank and the remainder of the tank filled with destemmed, lightly crushed Cabernet Franc. Three days of cold soak at 35F with active circulation resulted in the extraction of this wine’s underpinning brilliant color and intense fruit. Inoculation with three yeast strains (Rhone 4600, GRE, and VIN 13) encouraged a quick, cool fermentation that proceeded to complete dryness. Cold settling and stabilization on fermentation lees until just before bottling in January allows the wine to retain its vibrant fruit while building structure and complexity.

A warm and dry harvest with above average sun, a turn in the weather from cool and rainy in August to this sunny pattern made 2017 a wonderful harvest. Long hang time for developing flavors in the berries was a given, but due to the cooler than average growing season this could be accomplished without sacrificing freshness. This was the first harvest from the 3 year old vines on the Upper block.

Just off-dry in balance rather than overtly higher in sugar, our Riesling plays on the same tropical and orange fruit that are echoed in the Dry Riesling. The vineyard block was walked by the winemaking team just prior to harvest to drop any undesirable fruit, usually 1% of the total, so that what was remaining could hang longer and cleaner. A decidedly old world take on Cabernet Franc, the Kelby James Russell Cabernet Franc aims for the elegance and herbal notes that are hallmarks of this grape in the Loire Valley. Starting with the same fruit as went into the Dry Rosé, this table red is a refreshing middle ground between the finesse of Rosé and fruit concentration of a bigger Cabernet Franc, with savory elements that make it an ideal food companion.

2019 Dry Rose - Kelby James Russell

"The 2019 Dry Rose Kelby James Russell is a Cabernet Franc made at Red Newt and sourced from Nutt Road Vineyard on Seneca Lake. Dry, it cmoes in with just one gram of residual sugar and 6.15 of total acidity, plus 12% alcohol (and a pH of 3.43, for you geeks out there). Whew. In it's youth, this feels surprisingly full-bodied, all things considered. Then, of course, we expect it be dry with plenty of power - and it has its fair share. The structure is tightly wrapped around the mid-palate. This year, though, there is fine supportuingfruit to counter the acidity. It has dried herbs with some black fruits - always dry, fresh and serious, with gravitas. This seems likem a rather serious pink. It will be interesting to see how it developes and how long it stays at its peak. It might even be better next spring. At the moment, this has the good chance to be the best yet in what has been a fine brand. " Mark Squires, Wine Advocate

This wine showcases the traditional Niagara flavor while retaining a crisp, clean finish. If you are looking for a juicy glass of wine then go no further, this wine hits the spot. Usually harvested between September 10th-22nd, two to three weeks before the rest of Red Newt’s harvest. At that point the Niagara smells beautifully of grapes, if allowed to ripen further an unpleasant muskiness can set in. Niagara ripens so well and so early there is generally no weather issues to speak of, even rain just delays harvest a day or two. Jokingly, the only weather issue could be that the grapes ripen before we are ready for harvest to start.
